The origins of this boozy celebration stretches back over 200 years. According to cocktail folklore, the first definition of the word “cocktail” appeared in an 1806 New York newspaper, The Balance and Columbian Repository, in response to a reader’s question. The definition described a cocktail as a “stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters.”
